The Low FODMAP Diet for IBS

What is a low FODMAP diet?

FODMAP is the acronym for a group of short chain carbohydrates found in food that are generally poorly absorbed by our digestive system. It stands for ‘Fermentable Oligo-, Di-, Mono-saccharides and Polyols’. These carbohydrates exist in a variety of different foods such as wheat, milk, and some fruits and vegetables. This diet constitutes of restricting high FODMAP foods for at 6-8 weeks and replacing them with suitable alternatives that are low FODMAP. Next, FODMAPs are reintroduced slowly to gauge individual tolerance level.

A low FODMAP diet is effective in reducing IBS symptoms

FODMAPS could aggravate IBS symptoms – like  wind, bloating, diarrheoa and abdominal pain. It was developed by a brilliant team at Monash University in Melbourne, Australia. Many studies have shown symptom relief in people with IBS.

For best results, see a FODMAP trained dietitian

In a recent study 76% of patients that saw a FODMAP-trained dietitian reported an improvement in symptoms after being on the diet. The diet is complicated and a dietitian is best placed to provide all support needed for good results.
